A 74-year-old man was injured and a horse killed in a crash involving a horse-drawn buggy and a pickup truck in Elkhart County.

The collision happened just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, on County Road 3, just south of County Road 50. According to sheriff’s deputies, the buggy, driven by a Nappanee man, was headed north when the horse became spooked by a nearby combine operating in a field alongside the road.

The startled horse veered into the southbound lane and into the path of an oncoming 2008 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 17-year-old Nappanee boy.

The man sustained facial and arm lacerations and was taken to Elkhart General Hospital. The horse died at the scene. The teenager was not hurt.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage. No citations were issued, according to the report.
