A man died after being struck by a semi while running into traffic on the Indiana Toll Road near Chesterton.

Indiana State Police say the incident occurred shortly after 12:40 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, near mile marker 32, about one mile east of the Valparaiso/Chesterton exit.

Authorities were alerted to a man running in and out of traffic in the eastbound lanes. Weller arrived to find the 36-year-old man from St. Charles, Missouri, walking on the inside shoulder.

After briefly speaking with the man, he suddenly ran into traffic and was struck by an eastbound 2019 Volvo semi in the far-right lane. Weller attempted to render aid, but the man reportedly became combative. Porter County EMS arrived and transported him to a nearby parking lot, where he was airlifted to a hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the semi, a 34-year-old from Pikesville, Maryland, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

A vehicle believed to belong to the deceased was located about a half mile west of where he was found walking. The investigation is ongoing.
