UPDATE: 17-year-old boy ID’d in Mishawaka shooting, second teen detained

Police in Mishawaka have released new details regarding the deadly shooting that happened early Tuesday morning in the 500 block of East 12th Street.

It was around 2:30, a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, when police arrived at Parkview Terrace Apartments and found 17-year-old Wesley Dancler suffering from a single gunshot wound. He died at the hospital.

The investigation reveals the shooting happened inside nearby apartments during a gathering of teenage and adult acquaintances.

Witnesses at the scene described the discharge of a firearm as accidental. Investigators have identified a 15-year-old boy who was handling the firearm at the time.

The teen has been interviewed and based on the evidence, the juvenile has been detained at the Juvenile Justice Center of St. Joseph County and is facing a preliminary charge of Reckless Homicide — a Level 5 felony under Indiana law if committed by an adult.
