One person was killed and three others were injured following a two-vehicle crash Saturday evening along Old U.S. Highway 20 near River View Manor Drive.
The collision happened around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, when a westbound Honda Fit driven by a 24-year-old South Bend man left the roadway, overcorrected, and crossed the center line. The Honda was then struck on the passenger side by an eastbound Buick LaCrosse driven by a 33-year-old Elkhart man.
Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and came to rest along the highway. Officials say the crash occurred during rainy weather on wet pavement.
A passenger in the Honda, Noheli S. Gonzalez Umbria, 26, of South Bend, suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The driver of the Fit was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with a head injury and complaints of full-body pain. The driver of the LaCrosse was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with chest and head pain and possible broken ribs. His passenger, a 15-year-old Elkhart girl, sustained facial injuries and a deep knee laceration.
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office says the crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending as investigators continue to review evidence and crash reconstruction reports
