The City Council has approved Elkhart’s 2026 budget, cutting nearly $7 million from this year’s spending.
Council members passed the budget 8-1, focusing on essential expenses.
City leaders said the reductions prepare for Senate Enrolled Act 1, signed into law in April, which will change property taxes over the next two years and local taxes by 2028.
Elkhart faces an estimated $40 million loss in funding by 2028, about a third of its operating budget.
This year, the city cut $6.7 million from its spending.

If only Mayor Rod hadn’t wasted all that money on stupid vanity projects like the toll road overpass or juggling all the streets downtown… Maybe there would be enough of a reserve to better weather these changes without hurting the people who show up every day to work for him.
I understand wanting to leave your mark, but it really should be a sensible mark.
