Indiana’s new Blackout license plate has surged in popularity, topping 70,000 sales in only three months and generating more than $2.3 million for the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the agency announced Friday.
The Blackout plate, now one of the BMV’s best-selling Special Group Recognition options, has outpaced similar designs offered in other states. While most sales have been to standard passenger vehicles, the BMV is reminding motorists that the plate is also available for light trucks up to 11,000 pounds, motorcycles, and RVs.
“We do our best to give our customers options,” BMV Commissioner Kevin Garvey said in a statement. “The Blackout plate is proving to be a popular option, and the numbers prove it. I want all Hoosier drivers to know the Blackout plate is available not only for their cars, but also trucks, motorcycles, and RVs.”
The agency also announced that a disability Blackout plate will debut in 2026.
Drivers can purchase the Blackout plate or any other design at BMV branches, online at myBMV.com, or at BMV Connect kiosks. Additional fees apply. For branch hours, online services, or kiosk locations, visit www.IN.gov/BMV.
