The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has filed multiple felony charges against a Mishawaka man accused of a home invasion and stabbing that occurred on New Year’s Eve.
Prosecutors have charged 55-year-old Stephen Sherwood with attempted murder, a Level 1 felony; burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, a Level 2 felony; battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony; and intimidation, also a Level 5 felony.
The incident happened on Dec. 31. Police say a man forced his way into a Mishawaka home, attacked another man with a knife, and threatened a woman holding a child. When an officer arrived and the suspect shut the door while armed, the officer fired.
Court records indicate a judge has found probable cause in connection with the home invasion and stabbing, and a warrant has been issued for Sherwood’s arrest. Sherwood was injured during the incident and remains hospitalized under law enforcement supervision. He is expected to be transported to the St. Joseph County Jail once released from medical care, where he will be held pending trial.
The victim of the stabbing underwent emergency surgery at a local hospital and is currently recovering.
Under an interlocal agreement, the investigation involving the officer’s use of force has been turned over to the St. Joseph County Police Department and the South Bend Police Department. That portion of the investigation remains ongoing and will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for review once completed.
