A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with a deadly shooting early Sunday morning in South Bend.
Riley Morgan-Reed faces a charge of murder along with a felony firearm enhancement in the death of 21-year-old Carl Bates.
Police say they were alerted to gunfire just after 2 a.m. Sunday through a ShotSpotter notification indicating five rounds had been fired near Kentucky Street. While officers were responding, they received additional reports of three more shots fired near Dunham Street and a person who had been shot.
When officers arrived, they found Bates lying on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to court documents, investigators interviewed 11 witnesses who said they had been drinking and smoking at a home on Dunham Street when Morgan-Reed arrived with two other people.
Witnesses told police Morgan-Reed showed several people a Glock 19 handgun equipped with a 30-round magazine and discussed wanting additional attachments and accessories for the weapon. Some witnesses also reported that he made vague threats, including saying he might shoot someone in the leg.
Shortly before the shooting, Morgan-Reed and two others reportedly left the home to smoke inside a nearby vehicle. Witnesses inside the house later told police they heard shouting outside moments later.
Neighbors told investigators they saw the vehicle doors open and Bates exit the vehicle yelling that someone had tried to rob him.
Gunfire then erupted near the intersection of Dunham and Kentucky streets, where Bates was shot and killed.
Court documents state that police later recovered an iPhone matching the description witnesses provided of Morgan-Reed’s phone.

Another accused murder with dead eyes and fuzzy hair. Not someone I would want my daughter to bring home for a meet and greet.
