A 41-year-old man in Michigan City faces multiple felony charges following a March 11 incident involving alleged threats and explosive devices.
According to documents filed in LaPorte Superior Court, Matthew Schutz has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a destructive device or explosive, stalking, and resisting law enforcement.
Police say the investigation began around 5:56 p.m. when a woman called 911 reporting that Schutz-who she said was subject to a protection order-was heading to Full Gospel Church on Ohio Street with explosives and intended to shoot a man.
The caller also told police Schutz had threatened to kill her and her family.
Officers responded to the church and located a red pickup truck matching the description provided. Schutz was found inside the building and approached by police.
During a pat-down, an officer felt what was described as a cylindrical object in Schutz’s clothing. Schutz allegedly claimed it was a firework, then fled when officers attempted to remove it.
He was subdued and taken into custody. Police say five cylindrical objects with wicks were recovered from his pockets.
Investigators later obtained a search warrant for Schutz’s residence, where they say evidence of explosive device manufacturing was found. The Porter County Bomb Squad assisted in the investigation, and at least one substance tested positive for flash powder.
Authorities also reviewed text messages in which Schutz allegedly made threats against multiple individuals, including the original caller and her family.
During a March 12 interview, Schutz admitted to making the threats, telling investigators they were made out of anger. He also acknowledged knowledge of explosive device construction and indicated one device could cause serious bodily injury.
Schutz has made an initial court appearance. No additional court dates have been announced.
