After months of discussion and public input, seven local governing bodies in St. Joseph County have unanimously approved a plan to combine fire protection services.
Town councils in Osceola, Indian Village, and Roseland joined township boards from Penn, German, and Harris in supporting the merger, which will create a unified fire territory serving multiple communities.
Officials say the move is designed to improve coordination, response times, and overall service. While some residents raised concerns about potential tax increases, leaders emphasized those fears are largely based on misunderstandings.
They explained that any increase would apply only to a specific portion of a property tax bill, not the entire amount.
The additional funding is expected to support firefighter recruitment, retention, and training, particularly as emergency call volumes continue to rise.
The new department will eventually adopt its own leadership structure, branding, and equipment plans, though those details have not yet been finalized.
