Bristol Street construction to begin in April

(Jon Zimney/95.3 MNC)
Construction on Bristol Street is set to get underway in April as part of a state effort to improve safety and reduce crashes.
The project will run through November and will be completed in phases. From May through August, westbound traffic will remain open… with eastbound lanes reopening from August through November.
A detour will be set up between Jeanwood drive and County Road 15.
Officials say Bristol Street has long been a problem area, with missing sidewalks and sudden lane changes creating safety concerns for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. he project will widen the roadway, add a new multi-use path for walking and biking, and create a more consistent layout.
When it’s finished, Bristol Street will have three lanes, including a center turn lane to help improve traffic flow.

So let me get this straight. The same people that restricted the bridge over the Toll Road on SR 19 3 YEARS IN A ROW and completely screwed up long held traffic patters in downtown Elkhart, and did the same to E. Jackson are going to bring us new and improved restricted lanes on Bristol Street. Rather than restricting the lanes there needs to be MORE LANES. The traffic count likely justifies more lanes.

I only have one and only one reason to go downtown. To visit the Post Office. Yet there are other postal facilities that are easier to use and I use them to avoid the screwball traffic patterns now in use in Elkhart.

We now have the new wave of cool (or fools) at the road and street department. Those new ways are not necessarily better than the old ways. Motorists will now need to anticipate long lines at red lights on Bristol Street ad infinitum.

This is NUTS!
