The South Bend Fire Department is warning residents about the dangers of improper electrical use after responding to multiple structure fires in the past week linked to electrical issues.
In one case, officials say a household extension cord was plugged into another extension cord and then connected to a space heater. The cords overheated and melted, igniting nearby carpet, bedding, a mattress, and part of a wall.
Fire officials say these types of incidents can quickly escalate and lead to serious damage or injury.
The department is reminding residents to never plug extension cords into one another and to always plug space heaters directly into wall outlets. Heaters should also be kept at least three feet away from furniture and other flammable materials.
Officials also caution against running cords under carpets, rugs, or bedding, where heat can build up, and say any cord that feels warm to the touch should be unplugged immediately.
Firefighters say these recent incidents could have had much more serious outcomes and are urging the public to take extra precautions to prevent electrical fires.
