An 18-year-old Elkhart man is facing an attempted murder charge in connection with a shooting that seriously injured a victim earlier this year.
Court records show Xzavion Jerraid has been charged with Attempted Murder, a Level 1 Felony. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for May 21, with a jury trial set to begin Aug. 3.
Investigators say the shooting happened around 4 p.m. on Feb. 9 near 6th and Jefferson streets in Elkhart. Officers responding to the scene found a young male victim suffering from gunshot wounds and unresponsive. The victim underwent emergency surgery and survived.
According to investigators, surveillance video showed a black SUV stopping in the roadway before a man exited the vehicle, struck the victim in the head, fired several shots, and fled the area.
Police later spoke with the owner of the SUV, who reportedly told investigators Jerraid had possession of the vehicle at the time of the shooting. Investigators also allege Jerraid admitted he had been involved in a shooting that day.
Authorities say phone and electronic data connected a device associated with Jerraid to the SUV around the time of the incident.
The victim later identified the suspect by the nickname “Zay,” telling investigators he recognized him from an Elkhart teen activity center and from social media.
