Congressman Rudy Yakym has introduced the Preserving Community Food Assistance Act of 2026.

The legislation would allow food pantries and distributors to once again request identification from people seeking food assistance.

Yakym says the bill would help local organizations better manage limited resources and prevent abuse of charitable programs.

Supporters include MAC Food Pantry in Mishawaka and Hearts United for Bristol Food Pantry, both of which say current USDA guidelines have strained supplies and staffing.

Pantry leaders say the proposal would restore flexibility while helping ensure assistance reaches local families and individuals most in need across Northern Indiana communities.
