The teen accused in the shooting death of 10-year-old Sophia Burks will be tried as an adult in St. Joseph County.
Court documents say Jacob Olvera turned 18 just days after the February 7 shooting in Mishawaka. He now faces felony charges including criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and possession of a machine gun.
Police say Burks was found dead from a gunshot wound in the basement of a Taylor Street home. Investigators say Olvera allegedly brought a real firearm into the residence while telling others it was a BB gun. Authorities later recovered additional guns, ammunition, and firearm components connected to the case.
No court date has been scheduled at this time.
