The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-2 tornado struck the Bristol area on Thursday night, June 11, during severe storms that moved across Michiana.

Weather officials say the tornado packed winds of up to 115 miles per hour and carved a path just over two miles long. The twister was on the ground for about four minutes, between 10:46 and 10:50 p.m.

The tornado reached a maximum width of about 100 yards. One person was injured, but no fatalities were reported.

The National Weather Service also says a tornado that touched down in Porter County, Thursday night, has been rated an EF-3 based on preliminary findings.

Damage reports from northwest Indiana include downed power lines, uprooted trees and overturned recreational vehicles.

At the height of the outages, nearly 70,000 homes and businesses in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan were without electricity. Utility crews worked through the night to restore service, although many customers remained without power Friday.
