The South Bend Police Department is reminding residents of the city’s juvenile curfew ordinance after receiving reports of young people gathering in public places during overnight hours.
Under the ordinance, juveniles ages 15 through 17 are prohibited from being in public places between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. On weeknights, those juveniles may not be in public after 11 p.m. or before 5 a.m.
Children younger than 15 are prohibited from being in public places between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. on any day.
Police noted several exceptions to the curfew, including when a child is accompanied by a parent, guardian, or another authorized adult. Exceptions also apply to juveniles traveling to or from work, school-sponsored activities, religious events, civic or recreational programs supervised by adults, and certain activities protected by constitutional rights.
Parents or legal guardians of children who violate the curfew can face fines. A first offense carries a $25 fine. A second offense within one year may result in a $100 fine plus court costs, while a third or subsequent offense within a year can result in a $200 fine plus court costs.
Police are encouraging parents and guardians to be aware of their children’s whereabouts during late-night and early-morning hours throughout the summer.
