A passenger was killed in a two-vehicle crash on South Bend’s northwest side Thursday night, and the driver of one of the vehicles has been arrested as the investigation continues.
South Bend Police responded around 10:45 p.m. Thursday to the intersection of Portage and Vassar avenues for a report of a serious crash involving a Chevy Malibu and a Toyota Camry.
When officers arrived, they found both vehicles heavily damaged. A female passenger in the Malibu suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts.
Due to the severity of the crash, the St. Joseph County Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Authorities said four occupants of the Camry, including two young children, suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators said the driver of the Malibu was evaluated at the scene, detained and later arrested in connection with the crash. The driver was not seriously injured.
The crash remains under investigation by St. Joseph County FACT.
