INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana has awarded a $400,000 grant to equip first responders with a life-saving medication that reverses the effects of drug overdoses.

The funding for the antidote, called naloxone, was announced Wednesday by Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller. The grant will be administered by Overdose Lifeline, Inc., a nonprofit that’s a provider of naloxone training and kits.

Overdose Lifeline will use the grant to equip police and aid workers with the antidote in counties with high rates of opioid abuse. The medication is in the form of a nasal spray sold as Narcan, the brand name for naloxone, and works by reversing the effects of an overdose of heroin or other opiates.

The grant comes from some of Indiana’s settlements with pharmaceutical companies over off-label and deceptive marketing.
