Man, 48, killed in crash on Ironwood Road in South Bend

A 48-year-old man was killed after the car he was driving struck a tree.

The collision happened around 11 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24 in the 54000 block of Ironwood Road in South Bend.

The crash happened when one vehicle attempted to pass another. The second vehicle sped up, causing the vehicle to fish-tail out of control and crash into a tree, according to Captain Tim Spencer with the St. Joseph County FACT team, as reported by ABC 57.

The man who died is identified as Mark C. Riggs of South Bend. A 50-year-old front seat passenger was taken to Memorial Hospital for his injuries, which included some broken bones. He condition has stabilized.

There were two other cars in the area when the victims’ vehicle left the road. The other two drivers have been interviewed and are cooperating with the investigation.

There were indications of high speed by the victim’s vehicle prior to the crash, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

Ironwood was closed between Douglas and State Road 23 for a few hours for the investigation and clean-up.

This was in front of my house. The tree saved us. If it weren’t for the tree it would have ended up in our bedroom.
