Crews have begun repairs on Elkhart’s 104-year-old hydro-electric dam.
For the first time in over one hundred years, the gates of the dam will be replaced, according to WNDU.
“Those gates have not been replaced and so they’ve done their job well,” Indiana Michigan power spokesman Tracy Warner explains. “They’ve served the facility very well. But it’s time to proactively replace those gates.”
The dam is responsible for 3.4 megawatts of energy, which Warner says powers many homes and businesses in the area.
The project is expected to last through December.
However…the preliminary work is causing traffic snarls this week for drivers on East Beardsley Avenue. During the construction a fishing point on the northside, upriver, will not be accessible.
