In the year that has passed since the Berrien County Courthouse Shooting, much has changed there.
The deaths of bailiffs Ron Kienzle and Joe Zangaro led to a number of changes in policy at the courthouse.
The South Bend Tribune reports that inmates are now transported from jail to courtroom by two people, not one. Their wrists are now chained to wrist restraints. And the Berrien County Community Foundation made a donation to pay for better quality holsters, which makes it more difficult for someone to take an officer’s gun.
State Representatie Kim LaSata is working on legislation that would protect court employees in the state and increase the penalties for attacks on court staff. It’s already passed the state House and she expects it to pass the Senate without issue.
