South Bend code enforcement recommends demolition of Drewry’s Brewery building

A proverbial bullet has been placed in the chamber when it comes to the old Drewry’s Brewery property in South Bend.

South Bend’s Code Enforcement members recommended demolishing the long-vacant brewery building on Elwood Avenue. Neighbors have complained that the building should be torn down because it’s an eyesore.

The building has “not been touched since 2012” and is inhabited by some homeless people, and that has city officials concerned, according to ABC 57.

Demolishing the buildings on the property would cost about $120,000. The building’s current owner, Steve Durkee, wasn’t at this week’s meeting. He’s been fined $15,000 for neglect and causing blight to the area around the building.
