More than 800 structures in the City of Elkhart have been impacted by last week’s heavy rains and flooding.

As flood waters slowly recede, crews from the Elkhart Fire Department have begun the process of going through homes to make sure they are safe for people to return to. As of late Sunday, crews had already gone through more than 150 homes, conducting a safety assessment and electrical assessment with the help of an electrical inspector.

While that process is underway, many people remain displaced from their homes and belongings.

During a news conference on Monday, Feb. 26, Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese announced a clothing drive for flood victims. He asked that any people willing to donate to drop off clothing items to the Tolson Community and Youth Center, 1320 Benham Ave. in Elkhart, between the hours of 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

The city will work with the American Red Cross and Elkhart Community Schools to distribute the clothing to families that are in need.
