Human skull discovered during excavation for new South Bend trail

The discovery of a skull will possibly delay the construction of a trail in South Bend.

The South Bend Tribune reports that the skull was found along Boland Drive at the site of a future paved trail north of Pinhook Park.

A Notre Dame archaeology expert was brought in and said he believes the skull could be part of a Native American burial site, hundreds of years old.

The DNR’s Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology will now investigate the skull and the site.

Construction has been put on hold and police patrols are now more present near the property to keep people away from it.
