Disciplinary hearing for SBPD officer Gorny set for early November

The Board of Public Safety has set a disciplinary hearing for Nov. 5 and Nov. 6 for South Bend Police Officer Justin Gorny.

Gorny is the officer that Police Chief Scott Ruszknowski wants to have fired for the deadly crash that claimed the life of Erica Flores at Western and Kaley, back in July.

Gorny was driving about 90 mph while responding to a reckless motorist call when he ran a red light and collided with Flores’ car. Her family’s attorney says surveillance video shows Gorny’s siren wasn’t sounding and he only activated his cruiser’s emergency lights seconds before the collision.

Last month, a grand jury decided not to charge Gorny with reckless homicide.

During the Board of Public Safety meeting on Wednesday, Sep. 19, board members accepted the chief’s recommendation that Gorny be terminated and agreed to Gorny’s request for a hearing.
