Emergency responders had more than just the usual fender-benders and slide-offs to deal with during the snowstorm on Saturday, Jan. 19.

An ambulance driver lost control of his vehicle on I-94 in Watervliet Township, causing the vehicle to rollover, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department. A 22-year-old medic received cuts to his head. The driver was not hurt. The two were transporting a 69-year-old Watervliet woman at the time.

In South Bend, an SUV nearly landed in the St. Joseph River after the driver lost control of the vehicle and drove down an embankment on Riverside Drive, according to WSBT. There was no serious injuries reported.

In Clay Township, a child fell through the ice of a retention pond. The child had been sledding at the time. According to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57,  the child was able to escape.

In DeKalb County, a Pleasant Lake man died after falling through the ice while ice-fishing. The body of Robert Penland, 45, was pulled from the water by emergency crews not far from where they found his portable ice fishing sled, the Indiana DNR reported.
