It turns out several mistakes were made by 911 dispatch after a vehicle ended up submerged in a retention pond on University Drive.

It happened during snowy, slippery conditions on New Years Eve. A 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl died. A 3-month-old survived, as did the children’s mother.

The was lost while dispatcher tried figuring out the exact location of the vehicle, leading to a delay of first-responders. The dispatcher’s line was mistakenly muted while the operator tried to talk to the mother, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

The incident was miscoded as a crash and not as a vehicle-in-the-water, and a second call-taker missed quickly finding the location on a map, due to the monitor being obstructed by another window that should have been closed. That led to a delay in dispatching a dive team.
