Several people were evacuated from their homes early Monday morning after an apartment fire broke out in Elkhart.

The Elkhart Fire Department was dispatched to the 1200 block of Midtown Court on reports of a structure fire just after 1:45 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy smoke throughout the third and fourth floors of the building.

All of the occupants were evacuated safely from the building with the assistance of the Elkhart Police Department. One person was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

An investigation revealed the cause of the fire to be from a tenant falling asleep while smoking in bed. The apartment had no working smoke detectors, and the resident was alerted by another person living in the building.

The Red Cross assisted 13 occupants who had been displaced due to smoke and water damage.

The fire was under control just before 2:30 a.m.
