Mishawaka Police investigating officer-involved shooting

Mishawaka Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting.

A Police officer shot a large K-9 that charged one of the officers who were called to the 300 block of East Grove Street to check on an unwanted person inside an apartment.

It happened around 11:50 a.m. on Thursday, July 29.

The resident of the apartment called police to report her ex-boyfriend was there, cutting up her clothing.

Mishawaka Police Officers arrived on scene and saw the ex-boyfriend’s car parked in the driveway. The officers parked down the street and were walking toward the residence in the street when a the K-9 charged one of the officers.

The officer discharged his weapon in an attempt to stop the attack.

The dog received nonlife threatening injuries and was taken to the Humane Society for treatment.

Question I thought a K-9 was a trained police dog commissioned by the Police. A Canine is a dog. Was the dog shot a Police Dog?
