Man sentenced in connection to deadly police pursuit in Elkhart County

An Elkhart man who confessed to causing the death of his friend in a crash will spend nine years in prison as part of a 27-year total sentence.

Roger Rhodes, 54, pleaded guilty to causing a death while resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, with a controlled substance in his blood and driving after losing his license.

He was charged following the death of his passenger, Bryan Bailey, 40, of Niles, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.

The crash happened in June of 2020.

Rhodes fled from police during an attempted traffic stop near C.R. 6 and C.R. 7 and struck the back of a semi-truck, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.

Bailey died at the scene.

Rhodes admitted that he took meth sometime before getting behind the wheel and that he didn’t have a valid license.
