Governor Whitmer is expected to propose a big bonus program for Michigan teachers and school staff.

The plan would spend $2.3 billion in the next four years to recruit and retain teachers and staff with annual bonuses. The bonuses would start at $2,000 and build up to $4,000 by 2025.

It’s part of a strategy to combat educational shortages in the state, and is part of the budget she will present to lawmakers.

The bonuses would begin in the fall if the plan is approved, with the $2,000 bonuses aimed at full-time employees, and bonus potential for part-timers based on their workload.
