Hearing set to determine if juvenile suspect in killing should be waived to adult court

A hearing about the motion requesting a 16-year-old boy to by tried as an adult for the murder of 17-year-old Terez Parker Jr. of South Bend is set for Wednesday afternoon, Sep. 14.

A delinquency petition was filed against the 16-year-old boy, in the murder of Terez Parker Jr, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

The delinquency petition was authorized on Tuesday. It means the teen is facing murder and attempted robbery when committed by an adult.

Parker Jr. died back in March in a shooting on Roger Street in South Bend.

From the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office:

Today, Magistrate Graham C. Polando authorized the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office’s filing of a delinquency petition against a 16-year-old South Bend boy for his role in the death of Terez Parker Jr., 17, of South Bend.

Following a review of the delinquency petition, the Court found that there is probable cause to believe the teenager is a delinquent child with regard to the commission of the following offenses:

Count I: Felony Murder, a Felony when committed by an adult
Count II: Attempted Robbery, a level 5 felony when committed by an adult

The teenager is currently detained at the Thomas N. Frederick Juvenile Justice Center.

The Prosecutor’s Office also filed a motion for waiver of jurisdiction, requesting that the boy be tried as an adult in Superior Court. A hearing to set a waiver hearing date has been scheduled for Sept. 14 at 2 p.m.
