Michigan bill seeks to educate prisoners on voting rights upon release

A bill in the Michigan House would require prisons to give voting registration information to exiting inmates.

House Bill 4534 would require the state’s Department of Corrections to provide both identification and information about voter registration to people who have been convicted of felonies. Michigan is expected to release an estimated 6,500 people from its prison system in 2023, and 95% of them will be released on parole.

Bridge Michigan reports that nearly 33,000 people are currently imprisoned in the state. Michigan is one of a small number of states that immediately reinstates voting rights to those who have served their sentences, and many of those inmates are not aware of their rights.
