Sixth child has died after LaPorte Avenue house fire

A sixth child has now after fire consumed a home on LaPorte Avenue in South Bend.

Angel Smith, 11, had been hospitalized in Indianapolis since Sunday’s blaze. Her five siblings; Davida Smith, 9, Faith Smith, 17 months, Demetis Smith, 10, Deontay Smith, 5, and D’Angelo Smith, 4 died at the scene.

Her father, David Smith, 67, tried to get the children out of the home, but couldn’t, according to South Bend fire officials.

One firefighter fell through the second floor of the home and was taken to the hospital He has since been released and is expected to return to work in the near future. A second firefighter suffered minor injuries.

South Bend Fire Investigators are working closely with South Bend Police and Investigators from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

According to a story published by The South Bend Tribune, the property manager of the home was issued several violations, last summer, after an inspection of the home. The violations centered on electrical problems inside the home.

The Tribune also reported that WJM Property Management made all the needed repairs before the Smith family moved into the home.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation at this time.

A donation drive has been organized for the family. It is taking place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, at South Bend First Church of the Nazarene.

Men’s clothing, boots and shoes are needed, along with hygiene products and other items. Gift card donations will also be accepted.

Also, the Community of South Bend has established the “Smith Family Memorial Fund” to support the family. Monetary donations can be made at any First Source Bank.
