Family pets die in Mishawaka house fire

(Tommie Lee/95.3 MNC)

A family was displaced and two pets were killed in a house fire in Mishawaka.

It happened Thursday afternoon in the 400 block of Lowell Avenue. Downed power lines made fighting the fire difficult, according to Battalion Chief Jeff Hums. He told WNDU that crews battled the heavy fire quickly and the residents were not home. Their pets could not be rescued.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
