Authorities are investigating a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 20-year-old Mishawaka man.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 5000 east block of U.S. 20 just before 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, after receiving reports of a serious collision.

According to the preliminary investigation, Caleb Tekker, 20, driving a 2012 Ford eastbound, tried to overtake two slower-moving vehicles by crossing into the westbound lanes. While attempting to return to the eastbound lanes, Tekker lost control of the vehicle, which veered through the grass median, crossed back over the eastbound lanes, and ultimately struck a concrete barrier on the property of the LaPorte County Highway Department.

Tekker was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe speed may have been a contributing factor, according to the police report. The crash is still being investigated.
