St. Joseph River dredging considered in Berrien County

(Alyssa Foster/95.3 MNC)

Part of the St. Joseph River may be dredged in the spring.

Berrien County officials have been working to secure a grant to allow for dredging around the island where the waters have become too shallow to navigate. A permit application was submitted last year, and now WSJM reports that it could be approved any day now.

The Corps of Engineers still has to sign off on the permit. Berrien County has made it clear that it can no longer afford to pay for river dredging, and marinas and boat owners would have to raise the necessary funding.
