Former Indiana University athletics doctor Dr. Brad Bomba Sr. has died at the age of 89 last Thursday. He was accused of improper prostate and rectal exams during yearly physicals.
Attorneys representing former IU basketball players are suing the university, getting back to an investigation into sexual assault claims against the former team doctor.
The investigation, managed by a law firm hired by IU, said the exams performed by Dr. Bomba were “clinically appropriate.”
However, five former players are suing the IU Board of Trustees and a former athletic trainer, Tim Garl. Neither Bomba nor Garl were facing criminal charges at the time of that lawsuit.
IU said nearly 100 people were interviewed, including former student-athletes, coaches, and university staff. Nearly 10,000 emails and other electronic records were looked at, as well as over 100,000 pages of paper documents spanning 60 years.
According to a report, someone did not believe the exams were “neither necessary nor appropriate,” and other people say they were medically appropriate.
The university says they will continue to make sure people will stay safe and take any acts like these seriously.
