Charges have been filed against a 53-year-old man following a hostage situation in Mishawaka that ended with an officer-involved shooting.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office filed eight criminal charges against Chad Bean in connection with a hours-long standoff Sunday, Dec. 21, at a home on Conner Drive.
According to court records, Bean faces five counts of criminal confinement, all Level 3 felonies. He is also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony, along with one count of stalking as a Level 4 felony and an additional stalking charge as a Level 6 felony.
Police say the Mishawaka Police Department, assisted by the St. Joseph County Metro SWAT Team, responded to the Conner Drive residence and successfully rescued five hostages.
During the response, Bean was wounded by police gunfire and transported to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Under an existing interlocal agreement, the South Bend Police Department has taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The department’s Violent Crimes Unit is continuing to review the incident.
Once that investigation is complete, authorities say all evidence, facts and statements will be forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for review to determine whether additional charges are warranted.
