Michiana’s Dyngus Day celebrations

Monday, April 6, is Dyngus Day in Michiana, bringing with it a rich blend of Polish heritage, faith, and spring celebration.
Observed the Monday after Easter, Dyngus Day traces its roots back to Poland, where it marked the end of Lent and the arrival of spring. Traditionally, boys would splash girls with water and tap them with pussy willows – symbols of cleansing, renewal, and new life.
That tradition made its way to the United States with Polish immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s, especially in industrial cities throughout the Midwest.
Here in Michiana, communities like South Bend and surrounding areas embraced the celebration as Polish families settled in the region to work in factories and foundries. Over time, Dyngus Day evolved from a religious and cultural observance into a lively community event featuring polka music, traditional Polish food, and plenty of dancing.
Today, it remains a celebration of heritage, resilience, and the long-standing Polish influence across Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan.
The Crumstown Conservation Club and the West Side Democratic Club will host their annual events.  The West Side Democratic Club in South Bend is holding their annual event at MR Falcons due to damage at the Democratic Club location.
