Investigators continue to piece together a deadly chain of events involving a shooting, house fire, and SWAT response in Elkhart County, now tied to a former police officer.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit says officers were called just before 2 p.m. Monday to the 2500 block of Links Drive after multiple 911 calls reporting gunfirePolice investigating two deaths, shooting, fire on Elkhart’s north side.

When police arrived, they found a 30-year-old woman outside with a gunshot wound and a man inside an apartment suffering from gunshot injuries. The man, identified as 38-year-old Kaylon Woods of South Bend, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Roughly 90 minutes later, authorities tracked a possible suspect to a home in the 28000 block of Golden Pond Trail. A fire had already been reported at the residence when officers arrived. After firefighters extinguished the flames, a body was discovered inside the home.

Amid the investigation, the South Bend Police Department confirmed the suspect had previously worked for the department.

According to officials, Adonis Joseph was hired in May 2011. In December 2017, the department’s Internal Affairs division opened an investigation into allegations involving Joseph, and he was relieved of duty. He resigned from the department on January 26, 2018.

Police have not released further details about the nature of the allegations and say they cannot comment further at this time.

“Our hearts are with everyone affected by this horrible and senseless tragedy,” said Scott Ruszkowski, Chief of Police in South Bend.

The investigation remains ongoing.
