Two zookeepers were hospitalized following a wolf attack at Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City on Tuesday, June 2.

According to officials, two wolves attacked the employees inside an exhibit at the zoo. Emergency crews responded and found one woman outside the enclosure suffering from severe injuries, including at least four bite wounds to her neck and limbs.

A second victim was found inside the enclosure with a wolf and had suffered a less severe bite wound to her forearm. Firefighters used a ladder to safely remove her from the enclosure.

Michigan City Police said both victims were in stable condition following the attack.

Authorities noted the incident occurred one day after another wolf at the zoo died of natural causes. The zoo remains open to visitors, but the wolf exhibit will remain closed while staff monitor the animals and review the circumstances surrounding the attack.
