Police investigating death of Indiana University student found in lake

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Police are investigating the death of an Indiana University student whose body was found in a lake four days after he was reported missing.

The body of 20-year-old Joseph Smedley was found late Friday in Griffy Lake, a few miles north of the school’s campus. Bloomington Police Captain Joe Qualters says investigators are still trying to determine how Smedley ended up there.

His sister, Vivian Brown, tells WTHR-TV that she received a text from Smedley saying he was leaving the country and that a similar letter found on his bed wasn’t in his handwriting.

Smedley’s family says he was a strong swimmer and the idea of him leaving the country was uncharacteristic.

Qualters says investigators will attempt to solve the unanswered questions surrounding Smedley’s death.
