Arrested Indianapolis gymnastics coach found dead in jail

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say an Indianapolis gymnastics coach charged with child molestation and child pornography has been found dead in his jail cell.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Katie Carlson says 49-year-old Marvin Sharp died of an apparent suicide Saturday night and no foul play is suspected. How Sharp died was not disclosed.

Sharp, the USA Gymnastics 2010 Coach of the Year, was being held without bond after being arrested Aug. 24 and charged with four counts of child molestation and three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor. A probable cause affidavit filed with local charges stated he repeatedly fondled or touched a 14-year-old girl he had coached.

He also faces federal charges of knowing receipt of child pornography and knowing possession of child pornography.
