Fire in Westville Correctional Facility, no injuries reported

WESTVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Officials say firefighters responding to heavy smoke coming out of a laundry room at the Westville Correctional Facility in northwestern Indiana quickly extinguished a pile of smoldering offender clothing.

Prison spokeswoman Sharon Hawk says no one was injured in the fire about 9 p.m. Thursday at the prison 40 miles west of South Bend. She says the laundry room was closed and no one was inside when the fire started. She says authorities don’t think the fire was intentionally set, but the cause remains under investigation.

She says the smoke was spotted by a correctional officer making routine security checks. She says supervisors couldn’t get inside because of the heavy smoke, so local fire departments were called.
