Election 2016: Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton favored by Indiana voters, according to Howey Politics poll

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are the favorite presidential candidates among Indiana voters ahead of the May 3 primary, according to a poll ran by WTHR and Howey Politics.

Trump is favored by 37 percent of Republicans polled, with U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz following at 31 percent and Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 22 percent, Howey Politics reported. Clinton is favored by 48 percent of Hoosier Democrats polled, while U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders trails close behind at 45 percent.

This is the first look at where Hoosiers stand in what has become a deeply divided presidential primary race on both sides of the political aisle. While Trump and Clinton are both leading in delegate counts nationwide, neither has secured their party’s nomination yet — which is putting unusual attention on Indiana’s primary.

The candidates are already spending money on advertisements on Indiana television and radio stations. Hoosier voters are casting early votes in record numbers ahead of the May 3 primary, a signal that voter turnout will be abnormally high.

Gene Ulm of Public Opinion Strategies polled a 500 base sample of both Democrats and Republicans from April 18 – 21. The margin of error is 4.3 percent for Republicans and 4.47 percent for Democrats.
