SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A retired South Bend police officer is set to enter the race against Republican Rep. Jackie Walorski for Indiana’s 2nd District congressional seat.

The St. Joseph County Democratic Party chairman says Lynn Coleman will seek the Democratic party’s nomination for the 2nd District seat in next year’s election. Coleman also was an assistant to former South Bend Mayor Stephen Luecke.

Party Chairman Jason Critchlow tells the South Bend Tribune that he believes Coleman will connect with working-class residents of the district because of his career as a police officer.

Walorski will be seeking her third term after winning re-election in 2014 with nearly 60 percent of the vote.

Democrats plan a Friday announcement event for Coleman with U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
