A plan to start the school day later in South Bend Community Schools is getting some pushback from the teacher’s union. 

The schools are asking parents about a plan to start the day at 9 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. in high schools and intermediate centers, WSBT reports, so that children can get more sleep. 

That’s a little more than an hour earlier than the current start time and an hour later than current dismissal times. 

The union president, however, wants plans to be delayed for a year so the plan can be analyzed, WSBT reports. 

The school board could take up the issue at a meeting later this month.
