Michigan unemployment rate drops to 5.1 percent, lowest point in 14 years

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.1 percent in August, its lowest point in 14 years.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate fell two-tenths of a percentage point last month.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget says Wednesday that total employment rose by 8,000 in August while the number of unemployed declined by 7,000.

The U.S. jobless rate also decreased by two-tenths of a percentage point from July to August.

Michigan’s current workforce and employment levels are more than 350,000 below totals recorded in 2001.
